A PhD project carried out at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research used sterile salmon to prevent inter-breeding with wild salmon. The reason that they want to prevent the farm salmons from breeding with the wild fishes, is that they create hybrids. The hybrids that were created have are not adapted to the wild life and these hybrids affect the wild salmon populations. Triploids fishes are genetically modified though the problem is that some of them turn out deformed because of mutations. The industry believe a problem causing that was the temperature. So if they control the temperature, then they would be able to
alter/reduce the deformations.
alter/reduce the deformations.
The reason I chose this article is that I did a previous scrams on salmon as well, so I thought that this article might have a connection. It wasn't exactly a continuation of the previous scrams article but it did connect with breeding. That was one connection that both articles had and made me connect with what I know to understand this article. Another reason that I chose this article is because, I didn't understand one of the title's word sterile. After reading the article and defining the word sterile I know understand that it means "not able to produce." The most interesting thing that I learned in this article was sterile salmons, because I found how these fishes are genetically modified as a triploid.
The nest steps that I think might happen after is that they discover another factor that also causes the deformations in the sterile salmons. Another step that might happen is that they figure out another way to prevent hybrids without using sterile salmon. I hope this is another step, because I feel that it is miserable and cruel to have the triploid salmons be deformed. It isn't their that they are like that, and instead of using the sterile fishes just for that, they should help them be normal too. It is sad for a fish not to have a fin, or tail to swim with, so I hope that they will find a way to stop the deformation of the triploids. I think preventing the deformations of the triploids, and creating hybrids is the two main important parts about this article.
