Observations:
Explain what you saw in the 500 ml beaker?
The 500 ml beaker had a vertical stratification in the water column of different densities because of the water masses.
The salt water was denser than the The warmer less dense water floats at the top of the surface by temperature and salinity. The water boundary was divided by the thermocline.
After gently tilting the the beaker describe what you observe of the 3 layers?
When tilting the 50 ml beaker the three layers are created because you moved the beaker which cause the thermocline boundary to mix. That brings the water across the boundary, so there would be three layers. The top being yellow, middle being green, and bottom being blue.
What color was the third layer and where did it form?
The third color is green and it formed in the middle by mixing the water boundaries of the top and bottom layer.
What is the third colors density?
The third layer's density it between the top and bottom layer.
How were you able to create the third layer?
The third layer was created by mixing the two first layers from the glass rod stick. The glass rod caused
the two water boundaries to mix and created the third green layer in the middle.
What is thermal stratification to the ocean and why does it occur?
Thermal stratification of the ocean is the occurring phenomenon that is significant to the structure, circulation, and
productivity by the temperature cause it is thermal.
What is the name of temperature stratification?
The name is thermal stratification for temperature stratification.
Describe/explain a reason why is thermal stratification important to the ocean?
Thermal stratification is important to the ocean because the temperature(cold/warm) is important to the living
organisms that live in the ocean. Some organisms need to live deeper in the ocean because their environment is
in a cold temperature. For some other organisms they need to live in the warmer swallow surface to survive.
